Just recently I became interested with my internet visibility. I think Googling a person tells you a lot about them, especially what they do online. A google search of my name appears to summon several results relating to creative projects I’ve done (perhaps I should publish more code on Google code or something?). Maybe if I open-source iBAPPO it will expose my left-brained side a bit more.

Yet the creative stuff is good too, my wallpaper seem to get a lot of attention on the web so I was thinking of making a DeviantArt account (which, by the way, is a great place to get wallpaper).

Erno Rubik Must be Turning in his Grave

I recently stumbled across an interesting device on the internets, it has to do with one of my favorite puzzles of all time, the Rubik’s Cube (or Büvös Kocka, “Magic Cube” as they call it in Hungary). What is it, you ask? It’s an electronic version of the original puzzle. “Electronic version!”, I thought, “it must have a timer LCD on it, and maybe it even scrambles itself!”. Indeed, I was wrong. I sat there, in shock, as the original Rubik’s cube was being defaced, and even mocked by this abomination of a toy. It’s called “Rubik’s Revolution!”, which is basically a completely different, much easier game that looks like a Rubik’s cube. Is it challenging? Maybe if you find pushing buttons challenging, the goal of the game is much like those “Spider Stomp” games at arcades. Pretty simple, press the button if the light is on.

What does this have to do with Rubik’s cubes, you ask? NOTHING. Is this what American kids have come to? Simplifying this “impossible” puzzle by making an unchallenging, light flashing, button pressing game? I think even the Odyssey’s Chase game was harder than this.

Of course, a WOMAN was behind this ridiculous monstrosity. Even worse, it’s a celebrity. None other than Vanessa Hudgens, a star of some high school musical aptly named, “High School Musical”, which is most likely centered around the love tales of two very obtuse reggies. See a video here of her talking about how she started a “revolution”! Even more worse, she calls it an ‘improvement’ on the ‘old’ Rubik’s Cube.

Anyway, if you’re smart enough, you can buy a real Rubik’s cube and laugh while seeing morons trying to press those lights as fast as possible!

Happy iCal day everyone! Today is a very special day for Mac geeks all over the world. Its the day that is so proudly (albeit, archaicly) displayed on the iCal icon when it is not running. Unfortunately though, I’m a little too late to make my paper hat celebrating this fine day, but I think a blog post will suffice given that they are so uncommon these days.

iPhone! Yay!

After over ten hours of waiting, I finally got my iPhone. And my first impression is: it’s beautiful, smart, and so much fun to use. In fact, I am actually typing this message on it right now! The keyboard is absolutely not a problem at all, it actually works very well. Everything works exactly as advertised, the effects are fast and responsive, the ‘flick’ is totally awesome, and the eye candy is what really makes this thing fun to use.

Anyway, I am totally loving this thing, so far, it seems worth every penny. Oh, I also had to switch to AT&T, so I have a new number.

NY Times’ website looks like crap in Safari

I was looking at the new iPhone commercials today, and I noticed that once again, the website chosen for demonstration of Safari on the iPhone was The New York Times’s website. I assumed that Apple chose the NY Times’ website because their pages have a decent amount of content on them with a mix of images as well. For some reason after watching the commercials, I had an urge to go to the NY Times’ website just to see what it’s like. First of all, I am a Safari user, I love Safari. As a web programmer/designer, I really appreciate Safari’s compliance with web standards. But I visited nytimes.com, the website looked like crap in Safari! Below is a picture:

As you can see, we’ve got all sorts of ugly stuff going on here. Content spilling off the right side of the container, broken images for some reason, misaligned columns, and not to mention, a non-fluid type layout.

This is so strange considering the iPhone is supposedly running “real OSX” and a real build of Safari! Here’s a picture of the iPhone displaying the NYTimes’ website:

Even in the ‘long’ mode it looks great!

Is Apple trying to tell us that Safari on the iPhone is actually better than Safari on the mac? What’s going on here!

Hackintosh 10.4.9!

I finally upgraded my ‘Hackintosh’ (my PC with OS X on it) to 10.4.9! Yay!

I’ve been dreading doing it, because I knew I would have problems, and yes, I did have many problems. Mainly problems with the USB driver, but it’s now all resolved and working better than ever! By better than ever, I mean it’s faster too because of the new kernel!

The update I used was JaS 10.4.9 Intel SSE3(only) update. After I installed the update (just by using Installer.app), I did get an error saying it couldn’t complete; that was bad. I also couldn’t launch any other applications after applying the update. But after a restart, I got an error saying it couldn’t load the AppleUSBUHCI kernel extension. I’m assuming this is because I updated to the latest kernel, and they were no longer compatible (lucky my HD Audio driver still worked!). So, for a while, I had no mouse, no keyboard, no flash drive to fix the problem, so all I could do was watch it boot up. To fix this, I updated the IOUSBFamily kernel extension (apparently, the AppleUSBUHCI kext was a plugin for that). I found this, actually, at Apple’s website here, and installed the NON -log version. That fixed the problem and now I have a once again fully functional OSX partition.

*sigh* Now I just need wait until Leopard comes out before I’ll have to do all this stuff again.

iBAPPO and BuzzSoft

Yes, I am finally writing about iBAPPO, it’s been a while since I’ve had an update to this site!

iBAPPO is a community website for IB and AP students, mostly of North Canyon. I have been working on iBAPPO for about 3-4 months now, and it’s looking great! We’ve already got 75 registered users! It’s turning out to be a huge success.

For those of you programmers/computer geeks who are curious, iBAPPO currently has around 8500 lines of code. That is, a fusion of PHP, CSS, Javascript, Ruby, and of course, HTML.

At this moment, I am working on a project called OpenBAPPO. OpenBAPPO will be an Open-Source version of iBAPPO for developers to play around with and maybe help iBAPPO become better. However, I am doubting releasing some of the security code, because I got a little lazy on some parts of php session validation, general security stuff; don’t want to leak that! So if you’re really interested in OpenBAPPO, leave a comment.

iBAPPO (OpenBAPPO) as well as BuzzBlog will soon become part of BuzzSoft©, yet another project I’ll be working on in the near future. It’s basically going to be a collection of my programming projects, at the moment, my PHP/SQL forum and blog software. But it may even go as far as the wordpress theme of this website.
